REPORTS

Chief's Report

We are currently in the process of getting our officers and the firefighters trained for the new drone.  They all have to go through FAA certification.  We are hoping to deploy the unit in early 2026.

We have put together a hotel task force due to the problems that we are currently having at the hotels.  The problems range from blight to human trafficking.  We have identified the problem hotels based on calls for service and ordinance violations.  We are focusing our enforcement efforts on those hotels.  We have collaborated with many different departments in the city to get compliance from the hotels.

Officer Lewis retired last week and Deputy Chief Filzek is set to retire mid December.  Lt. Koehler is due to retire in February 2026.  We have a few Sergeants that are set to retire by the end of 2026.  We will have lots of leadership changes at the PD within the next year.

We had a Reserve Unit recruiting event and we were able to bring in 4 new Reserve Officers. We will be sponsoring one of the new recruits through the Reserve Academy, one is in the background process and the other two were previous Reserve Officers that were interested in returning as a Reserve Officers.

Council Report

Council met last night and the alleyway for the new restaurant Bubba 33's was voted down by council to expand the alley way for better traffic flow.  The new restaurant can use the alley, build on the property but we will still have the existing problem of the traffic on 12 Mile Rd.  We are working on a solution for the 12 Mile Rd traffic.

We also passed the proclamation supporting the Family Court System.

At the 11/19/25 meeting, we will be appointing new council members at our meeting.

The City Tree Lighting Ceremony is on Monday, November 24, 2025 at 6 p.m.

UNFINISHED BUSINESS

Follow up on magnet purchase

Chairperson Peterson and Commissioner Scott suggested that we remove this from the agenda.   Co-Chairperson Covert will contact Councilman Fleming about the magnets and we will have an update at the February 2026 meeting.

Follow up on K-9 Demonstration event

The K-9 Demo was cancelled in September 2025 due to Officer Kreger’s funeral.  We will be adding this event to our 2026 workplan.  We can discuss the timing of the event to hold it earlier in the year due to Officer Bradley’s schedule promotion and Harko retiring.  We could also maybe combine the K-9 Demo with another City event.  We will further discuss at the February 2026 meeting.

Board Member Recruiting

A social media post was sent out on 8/20/2025 and we had 2 people interested in joining the board.  The Crime Commission still has two full voting member spots and one alternate member spot available.  Secretary Schell will repost on social media that the Crime Commission is looking for new board members.  Councilman Wright stated that the candidates go in front of Council two times a year to appoint new board members to a commission.
