Chief’s Report

Staffing updates - Since our last meeting, we have had two (2) new officers sworn in. One started about a month ago and came to us with experience from DPD and the other graduated from the Police Academy last week and was sworn in yesterday.  We have (2) more applicants in the background process and if they are both hired, that will bring us one short of full staffing. For our dispatchers, we have one dispatcher that started last week and one more that is starting soon.  With the two new dispatchers, that will put us at full staff for our dispatchers.

Retirements - We have a few upcoming retirements that will be happening in the next few months.  Ellen has been at the PD for 32 years and will be retiring on October 18th.  Lt. Fecteau is going to be retiring in February 2025.  Deputy Chief was set to retire in December 2024 but he signed a 2 year contract with stay with us.

For our SIU unit, we have assigned one full time officer to work the unit and will have another officer assigned to work the unit in a few months.  One of our other officers is in the process of joining the Oakland County SWAT team.  There is a little more training and once the training part is passed, they will then be selected to go to the SWAT Academy.

The Co Responder program is up and running.  Sabrina Fallone and Alyssa Waters have been selected as our Co Responders for the PD.

We have signed the inner local agreement for the Oakland County Human Trafficking Unit to start.  Our SIU department is in the process of training the Sergeant from Oakland County.

Accreditation update – We were first accredited in 2022, and the accreditation process takes place every 3 years.  We have an upcoming mock assessment in October and sometime in December, the State of MI comes in to assess us.  In February of 2025, we will sit in front of the panel to get our re-accreditation.

Our recruitment unit was rebranded since recruitment has been slowing down since we are closer to full staffing.  We will still be recruiting but changed the name to Community Engagement Recruitment Team aka CERT.  CERT is also available to do community events such as trunk or treats and end of the year picnics for the schools.

The camera for Rosie’s Park has been purchased and DPS is now working on getting power to the camera.  Once that is all done, there will be a camera installed at Rosie’s Park.

The K-9 demonstration was held a few weeks ago and the turn out was good.  Ali and Peg attended the event.  There were about 75 people in attendance at the event.  We discussed changing the date for the event for 2025 to the first weekend in October, so we are not hosting the event the same day as Trail Tunes.

Council Report

Councilman Fleming stated that council approved the replacement of a vehicle that was involved in an accident.  There was a question that asked to him about the insurance on the vehicles and Chief responded that the Finance department is who would answer that question.

K9 Demonstration Follow Up - Covered in Chief’s report

Record our Holiday Greeting at this meeting - Photo taken by Anna O’Bryan for the Crime Commission Holiday Greeting that will be posted on social media in December 2024.

Work plan 2025 - We discussed the events that we want to complete for the Crime Commission’s 2025 work plan.
